We'll reject Buhari, other leaders who reject #30,000 minimum wage - Labour
Owerri—Members of Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to quicken the process of the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage, adding that they were ready to reject anybody who rejects the minimum wage. Also in Anambra State, NLC vowed not to vote for any political party that did not support the implementation of the new minimum wage. The protest in Imo State which ended with a slight disagreement saw the executives led by Comrade Austin Chilakpu march to one direction while some members demonstrated to the Government House roundabout along Okigwe road, led by Mr.Samuel Iwuala
It was gathered that the message for the protest was the same but they disagreed on where to carry out the protest. According to the group led by Iwuala, “We are here for the good of Nigeria. We are here for the upliftment of this country. We have been contributing positively to the growth of this country. “But what we get is insult, what we get is maltreatment. We are tired of the hardship we are passing through. We are insisting that the minimum wage must be N30,000.
“With effect from today and till seven days, if nothing is done, we shall take our final decision. “Any president or governor who refuses to send the bill for our minimum wage to become a law then, we will reject that leader.” Anambra makes no commitment to pay Also in Anambra State, NLC, yesterday, vowed not to vote for any political party that did not support the implementation of the new minimum wage for workers. This came as the Anambra State government made no commitment towards implementing the N30,000 minimum wage when the protesting workers visited the Government House in Awka. The state chairman of NLC, Comrade Jerry Nnubia, had demanded commitment on the part of the state government towards the implementation of the new wage for workers, but the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu declined to make any commitment, saying that Governor Willie Obiano would only “adjust salaries when the time comes.” Apparently unhappy with the stand of the state government on the issue, the state chairman of NLC, Nnubia said the November 6, 2018 agreement ended the issue of whether the new wage would be paid or not, insisting that “the February 2019 general election would be foreshadowed by the new minimum wage.” According to him, Nigerian workers would not be disposed to vote for any political party that did not support the implementation of the new wage. Although he enumerated the efforts made by the governor to please workers, including the 15 per cent increment of salaries for workers within his first six months in office and regular payment of salaries, he observed that the new minimum wage remained sacrosanct. Representative of the National President of NLC, Comrade Uche Ebeh presented the NLC President’s address, in which he traced the various stages of negotiation for the new minimum wage, culminating in the November 6, 2018 tripartite agreement by the government to pay. When he was asked why the Imo State Chairman of the NLC, was not among them in the protest, said: “As we were marching from our Secretariat heading to the Government House roundabout, our chairman said that we should stop and divert to the office of the Secretary to the State Government, SGI, all of us refused that our original plan was to get to the Government House. “Then the chairman and some of his executives stopped and continued their journey to the office of the SGI. “Then myself and the other members moved to the Government House roundabout. The truth is that, we are not happy especially when your leaders abandon you, you cannot be happy.”

41-yr-old bus driver rapes 78-yr-old woman in Lagos
A 41-year-old commercial bus driver, Jelili Lawal, has been arrested for allegedly raping a stranded 78-year-old woman, in Oloti community, in Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja, Lagos.
The septuagenarian, with an undisclosed identity, was on her way home on January 1, but missed the way.
While asking questions from commuters on how to get to her base at Ketu, from Maryland, Ikeja, Jelili, was said to have offered to take her there, in his bus.
However, midway into the journey, Jelili reportedly detoured to Oloti village, off Adeniyi Jones, where he allegedly raped her.
While at it, the victim raised the alarm that attracted someone in the neighbourhood, who alerted the Police.
Parading the suspect before newsmen yesterday at the command’s headquarters, Ikeja, the command boss, Imohimi Edgal, said: “Policemen, who were informed, were directed to the location where the cry emanated from.
“They caught the suspect in the act and rescued the old woman, who was already bleeding from her private part as a result of the assault on her dignity.
“The victim has been taken to the hospital and she’s being counselled by trauma specialist, while, the suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation is over.”
However, the suspect denied the allegation, saying that his wife’s friend, who saw him with the old woman, raised the false alarm.
In a related development, Edgal disclosed that a 17-year-old boy was arrested two days later, for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl in Alakuko area of Lagos.
The suspect, Samuel Abiodun, according to him, lured the girl to an uncompleted building on Ademola Abiola Street, where he defiled her.
Three Shot, Many Injured As Fighting Disrupts APC Rally In Lagos
Three persons were reportedly shot as the official campaign flag-off of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State was marred by violence on Tuesday, January 8.
At the rally, several gunshots went off as some unscrupulous elements engaged in a bloody duel.
Though authorities are yet to confirm what the casualty figures are at the time, there are fears that that at least two persons might have been killed in the fracas.
Some journalist covering the event were also said to have have sustained various degrees of injuries.
The crisis reported began while Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was addressing party supporters at the Skypower Ground, Ikeja G.R.A.
There are claims that Musiliu Akinsanya, an official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), popularly known as MC Oluomo, was stabbed in the neck during the fracas.
It is speculated that a political feud within the ranks of the NURTW in lagos might be responsible for the chaos witnessed at the rally.
More details on the ugly incident are expected later.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, confirmed this to journalists on Tuesday after a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and its allies in Abuja.
He assured the labour leaders that the government will be presenting the recommendations of the tripartite committee to the States Security Council in the coming weeks.

Plot to assassinate Atiku, Saraki at campaign ground uncovered
…As Frank writes UN, UK, AU, others
Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank has said that a plot to assassinate the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his Campaign Director General, Sen. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, at a campaign ground in one of the northern states has been uncovered.
Frank, has however, written to the international community to call President Muhammadu Buhari to order and to inform the world that if anything happens to the duo of Atiku and Saraki or any of the PDP leaders at any political rally, the government of APC should be held responsible.
Saraki, Atiku
The letter addressed to the United Nations, the African Union, the American government, the governments of the United Kingdom and Canada among others, is also to inform the world on the harassment and persecution of some key opposition leaders in Nigeria in the name of fighting corruption by the Buhari-led administration.
Raising the alarm in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, Timi Frank, said information available to his group through intelligence and sources within the rank and file of the security agencies, revealed the plot by the current administration to arrange some hoodlums to disrupt one of the PDP presidential rallies at a particular northern state while a mobile police officer will directly shoot at either the campaign DG (Saraki) or Alhaji Atiku, which will later be blamed on armed bandits.
Frank said the plot was initially arranged to take place in Kogi State rally on Monday but the PDP leaders in the state got wind of the evil plan and quickly raised the alarm.
Recall that in a statement signed by the Head, Media and Publicity, of the Campaign Council, Usman Austin Okai, PDP had also raised similar alarm.
According to Frank, the only way the present administration hopes to stop Atiku Abubakar from becoming the next President is to assassinate him as being allegedly planned by the Buhari’s administration – “in desperation to score a new low by going against the towering popularity of the PDP’s candidate.”
The political activist recalled how Atiku Abubakar’s wife and children were threatened through a text message last year (2018) but despite official letter written to notify President Buhari personaly, nothing was done to unravel the perpetrators up till now.
“So, what we are saying is that through the help of God and intelligence we are getting to know some of the evil plans of the APC’s administration to stop the will of God for Nigeria. Politics should not be a do-or-die affair the way APC is playing it. Although the growing acceptability of Atiku Abubakar is threatening but the APC and the Buhari presidency should learn to play the game by the rule.
“Any attempt to cause havoc, using hoodlums or security agents will be resisted by Nigerians. We are raising this alarm because we don’t want to take anything for granted. We have seen political assassinations in the past and the country has also witnessed the recent assassination of a former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, allegedly carried out by this administration for political reasons,” Frank stated.

A fragile 2019 economic outlook
THE health of our 2019 economy looks fragile, like one convalescing from a protracted health challenge. Though we exited recession over a year ago, all macroeconomic performance indicators are still either in the negative or in sluggish recovery. But what are the key challenges as we brace up for 2019?
Nigeria Economy
The foremost has been revenue performance where fiscal policy execution has been hamstrung by weak cash flow. This is not just a 2018 problem; it has been with the economy for long. The implication has always been a poor public sector performance. In an economy that is perversely and perennially public sector-driven it becomes more obvious as to why the economy cannot do well. There was corruption under Jonathan but life was better – Bakare Linked to this is the mono-cultural economic structure where the public sector revenue and almost over 70 per cent of the economy run on the upstream oil industry. With its linkage to the entire economy in terms of job creation and industrialisation, the weaknesses of the economy are further buttressed. The outlook for 2019 is rather grave, with the steady decline in oil price which has already made a mess of 2019 appropriation bill even before its enactment by the National Assembly. Also, the fiscal policy execution has been tangentially weakened by poor budgetary politics and strategy. A situation where an annual budget was hardly available for implementation until the middle of every year in the past three years and beyond has not helped the economy. Consequently, capital budget implementation, the key driver of growth, has ranged from 35 to 45 per cent. In terms of budget implementation, the fiscal authorities have insisted that irrespective of the delays the process still runs its twelve-month cycle, spilling into the subsequent year. Based on this, we have seen a significant implementation level for the much desired capital expenditure. However, we call for the discipline of execution according to appropriation plan, as well as transparency in reporting the process and the results. The Buhari regime has also made some efforts since the promulgation of its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, ERGP, in 2017, to push harder at diversifying the economy through the remarkable support offered the agricultural and small/medium business sectors. These efforts have only shown marginal impacts. In the face of declining oil price, diversification efforts need to be intensified and a new programme for the domestication of the oil industry should ensue. We call on the Federal Government to commit strongly to its intention to insulate all economy-related agencies from partisan politics and focus them to policy implementations during the period of campaigns and elections. This policy should be continued long after a new government is sworn-in, in May 2019. The economy is too fragile to be abandoned, even for one fleeting second.
